Dr. Rami N. Khayat is a nationally recognized expert in sleep-disordered breathing who is affiliated with the UCI Health Sleep Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care services. His research addresses the mechanism of cardiovascular disease in sleep apnea and the impact of sleep disorders on the outcomes of patients with heart failure.

Khayat earned his medical degree from Tishreen University in Syria. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, followed by a pulmonary-and-critical-care fellowship and a sleep-medicine fellowship from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Khayat has received several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and medical device companies. He frequently serves on review panels for the NIH, the Department of Veterans Affairs and industry. He currently is one of the leaders of an NIH-funded multicenter clinical trial evaluating the impact of low-flow oxygen on patients with heart failure and central sleep apnea.

Khayat, who comes to UCI from Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, is the author or co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications.
