Raman Sankar MD, PhD, FAAN, FAES

Dr. Raman Sankar, MD, PhD, FAAN, FAES, is Professor Emeritus of Neurology and Pediatrics and Chief Emeritus of Pediatric Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also holds the title of Rubin Brown Distinguished Chair Emeritus in Pediatric Neurology. Dr. Sankar is a graduate of the University of Bombay, India.

He earned his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Washington and taught and conducted research for several years before attending Tulane Medical School, where he received his MD. He completed his pediatrics training at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and his neurology and pediatric neurology training at UCLA.

Dr. Sankar's laboratory research has focused on the mechanisms of seizure-induced injury and epileptogenesis in the developing brain. It has been supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research has also investigated methods to improve the screening of compounds with antiepileptogenic potential in the developing brain and to model the comorbidity of depression associated with epileptogenesis. More recent work, in collaboration with Dr. Mazarati, has demonstrated links among epilepsy, physiological stress, inflammation, and the modulation of serotonergic signaling in brainstem-hippocampal pathways.
