Ralph G. Dacey, Jr., MD, FAANS, is the Henry G. and Edith R. Schwartz professor and chairman of the department of neurological surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and neurosurgeon-in-chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Dr. Dacey grew up in Boston and is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He trained in neurological surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He is board-certified in neurological surgery and internal medicine. Dr. Dacey served as chief of the division of neurosurgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill prior to assuming his current position at Washington University in 1989. He counts among his achievements the recruitment of outstanding clinicians and scientists to his department. He has educated over 50 neurosurgery residents at Washington University.

Dr. Dacey’s surgical practice focuses on cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and brain tumors. His research has concentrated on the vascular biology of intracerebral microcirculation and the clinical management of cerebrovascular disorders and brain tumors. He has given more than 220 invited lectures nationally and internationally and has authored over 230 publications. He holds 40 patents.

Dr. Dacey is the former chairman of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and of the ACGME’s Residency Review Committee for Neurological Surgery. He has served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), and the Society of Neurological Surgeons and as a member of the advisory council of the NIH’s National Institute for Neurological Diseases and Stroke.
