Dr. Raj Padwal is a General Internal Medicine specialist, clinical epidemiologist, clinical pharmacologist, and physician entrepreneur. His primary focus is a blood pressure measurement and technology-assisted care. Dr. Padwal co-founded a University of Alberta start-up company, mmHg Inc., to develop and commercialize innovations in blood pressure measurement. He is past chair of the Hypertension Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and is a member of national and international blood pressure measurement guidelines and standards. In the Department of Medicine, Dr. Padwal is the associate director of research in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Globally, he volunteers his time and expertise to improve blood pressure control, particularly in low-to-middle-income countries through his work with NGOs and professional societies.

Dr. Padwal’s research in blood pressure measurement and technology-assisted care focuses on inventing more accurate methods of blood pressure measurement and better ways to use technology to improve hypertension diagnosis and control. Dr. Padwal’s research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Alberta Innovates, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, and Women and Children’s Health Research Foundation.

Dr. Padwal received the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s Paul W. Armstrong Excellence in Research Award in 2017 and Hypertension Canada’s Senior Investigator Award in 2014. He has received many other awards throughout his training and career for research, mentoring, and teaching.

Dr. Padwal has published 235 articles in peer-reviewed journals and ten book chapters. He co-edited Approach to Internal Medicine: A Resource Book for Clinical Practice. He is on the editorial board of several scholarly publications, including the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. He is a frequent presenter at regional, national and international conferences and learning events for health professionals.
