Rajasekhara “Raj" Ayyagari, MD, a Yale Medicine interventional radiologist, doesn’t just heal his patients. He’s dedicated to helping them live normal, healthy lives again after treatment. He is an expert in performing minimally invasive procedures for both men and women. One procedure helps men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). Only a few doctors in the United States regularly perform this new procedure, called prostatic arterial embolization (PAE). It involves placing small beads in the arteries that take blood to the prostate, which decreases blood flow and shrinks the prostate. Dr. Ayyagari also has expertise in uterine fibroid embolization, an outpatient procedure which effectively shrinks fibroid tumors without surgery. “These procedures change peoples’ lives dramatically,” says Dr. Ayyagari.
Dr. Ayyagari also treats patients in the Yale Cancer Center Liver Cancer Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital. He is pioneering cutting-edge radiological procedures such as one that helps cut off blood flow to tumors while washing the tumor area with chemotherapy drugs. In addition, he is an assistant professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at Yale School of Medicine, where he helps train the next generation of interventional radiologists.
