Rafael Jimenez MD

Dr. Rafael E. Jimenez, MD, MHA, is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Consultant in the Division of Anatomic Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A board-certified anatomic pathologist, he specializes in genitourinary pathology and breast pathology, with expertise in the diagnosis of urologic malignancies, breast diseases, and complex surgical pathology.

Dr. Jimenez earned his medical degree from the University of Costa Rica School of Medicine and completed training in internal medicine before pursuing residency in Anatomic Pathology at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. He subsequently completed fellowships in Surgical Pathology at Harper Hospital and Urologic Pathology at Emory University. He also earned a Master of Arts in Sustainable Healthcare Administration with an emphasis in Healthcare Management from the State Distance University of Costa Rica.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Jimenez serves as Program Director of the Mayo Clinic Genitourinary Pathology Fellowship and Executive Vice-chair of Practice for the Division of Anatomic Pathology. He has held numerous leadership positions within Mayo Clinic and national pathology organizations, including President-Elect of the History of Pathology Society. His research focuses on genitourinary pathology, urologic oncology, breast pathology, and surgical pathology, and he has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications that have advanced the understanding and diagnosis of genitourinary cancers.

Dr. Jimenez has received numerous honors for excellence in teaching, leadership, and pathology, including the Anatomic Pathology Faculty Teaching Award at The Ohio State University and election as an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Granada, Spain. He is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and an active member of several national and international professional societies dedicated to surgical and genitourinary pathology. Through his leadership in clinical care, education, and research, Dr. Jimenez continues to advance diagnostic pathology and the training of future pathologists.
