Dr. R. S. Gupta is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. After postdoctoral training in St. Louis (USA) and Toronto, he joined McMaster University and became a full Professor in 1986. Since 1995, his main research interests are in using genome sequences to understand the evolutionary relationships among microbes and characterize different groups of microorganisms in molecular terms. His group has pioneered the discovery of conserved indels in protein sequences, which are specific for different groups of organisms, as novel tools for genetic, biochemical and evolutionary studies and for microbial identification and classification.
