Priya Sampathkumar, MD, was born in India. She received her medical degree from Christian Medical College in Vellore, India (1991) and following a rotatory internship went on to complete an internal medicine residency at the University of North Dakota in Fargo (1993-1996). At the completion of her residency, Dr. Sampathkumar decided she loved both the Midwest and small-town living and began looking for a place that offered specialty training in the Midwest.

That place was Mayo Clinic and she completed first a fellowship in critical care medicine and subsequently, an infectious diseases fellowship in 1999. In 2000, she was appointed to the staff of Mayo Clinic, Infectious Diseases, in Rochester, Minnesota. She is an associate professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Dr. Sampathkumar has a keen interest in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and patient safety. She serves as chair of the Rochester Infection Control Committee and the Immunization Subcommittee; and also is an active participant in numerous HAI reduction task forces with the Minnesota Department of Health. She has received recognition from Mayo Clinic, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology in America for her work in infection prevention.
