From 1994 to 2011 chief physician at the cardiology department Gentofte Hospital, where he specifically was responsible for pacemaker operations curative treatment of rapid and life-threatening heart rhythms and the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) .
Poul Erik Bloch Thomsen has been a consultant on several cardiovascular departments in northern Europe, where he has taught younger colleagues in the above treatments and is internationally recognized for his research.
