Dr. Pinghong Zhou, a professor of surgery, is currently a specialist in therapeutic endoscopy, a fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE), vice president of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (CSDE), and the chief of the endoscopy center of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.
Dr. Zhou graduated from Shanghai Medical University in 1992. Having completed his basic surgical training at Zhongshan Hospital from 1992 to 1998, he began training in digestive endoscopy as a senior resident in 1999. He also received the most comprehensive training in various advanced endoscopic areas, including EUS under the mentorship of Kenjiro Yasuda in Japan in 2000, ESD under Hiroyuki Ono in Japan in 2006, and ERCP under Peter B. Cotton in the USA in 2008.
His main research focuses on endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors. His main work is on minimally invasive surgery nowadays. AS one of the ESD pioneers in China, he has gained much experience in EMR, EPMR, and ESD. Recently, he has been very interested in endoscopic resection of submucosal tumors (SMT) and tunnel endoscopic surgery, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) of esophageal achalasia. He has organized and chaired the 1st to 13th Sino-Japan Summit Forum on ESD and 54 ESD training courses in China, having been invited to give presentations and live demonstrations in more than 30 countries.
