Dr Pieter Nel was educated in South Africa and obtained his medical degree at the University of Pretoria in 1985. In addition to his medical degree, he completed a course in accounting and finance for health professionals through the University of South Africa. Pieter relocated to Australia in 1999 and has since gained fellowships with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

He is accredited as a rural generalist with special skills in general emergency medicine (GEM), and obstetrics and gynaecology. Pieter was appointed as the director of emergency medicine at the Mackay Base Hospital in July 2010. In addition to his role as the director of ED, Pieter also practices as a senior medical officer in obstetrics and gynaecology. Formerly, he was, for 8 years, director of emergency medicine in Mount Isa where he played a vital role in establishing telemedicine for oncology between the Mount Isa and Townsville Hospital.

During his time working with Queensland Health, Pieter has actively participated in education and research and more recently was appointed as the chief clinical digital officer for his involvement and assistance with the implementation and optimisation of the Integrated Electronic Medical Record (IEMR) across multiple QLD health facilities. His interests include photography and running. In March 2013, Pieter completed a marathon in Antarctica, allowing him to accomplish a lifelong goal of running seven marathons on seven continents.
