Pierre-Yves Martin studied in Geneva. His specialization in nephrology led him to Denver, where he focused on the extra-renal mechanisms of sodium hydroxide retention. Back in Geneva, he worked on the renal regulation of aquaporins with Udo Hasler. He was appointed assistant professor and chief physician of the Nephrology Department in 2003. Under his leadership and that of Eric Feraille, his research group grew and joined kidney.ch, an NCCR program. The Nephrology Department is experiencing significant clinical activity, particularly in renal transplants with living donors.
