Pierre Vanderhaeghen was born in Brussels on August 30, 1967. After studying at the Robert Catteau Athenaeum in Brussels, he began studying medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). From the beginning of his studies, he is enthusiastic about life sciences, and makes several trips to Belgian and foreign laboratories as a student-researcher. At the end of his studies, he began a doctoral thesis at the ULB as an Aspirant of the FNRS, under the direction of Professors Vassart and Parmentier at the IRIBHM. He will work there for 5 years, focusing on the study of olfactory receptors intriguingly expressed in spermatozoa. He defended his thesis in 1996, having acquired a solid background in molecular biology, and especially the taste for risk and discovery.
