Phillip K. Peterson, M.D. is a Professor of Medicine and also Director of the International Medical Education and Research Program in the Medical School. He received his M.D. in 1970 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in NY, where he also completed his Internal Medicine training. After an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of Minnesota Hospital, he joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine in 1977. In 1984, he moved to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he served as Director of Infectious Diseases until 2004.

In 2002, he assumed the role as overall Director of the Division, a position he held until 2010. In 2005 he moved to the Center for Infectious Disease and Microbiology Translational Research (CIDMTR) along with his research laboratory into the new McGuire Translational Research Facility on the U of M campus. His major research interests have been in the area of host defenses and pathogenesis of central nervous system infections.
