Philippe Housmans MD

Dr. Philippe R. Housmans is a Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and an internationally recognized expert in cardiac anesthesia, cardiovascular physiology, and anesthetic pharmacology. With a distinguished career spanning clinical care, research, and education, he has made significant contributions to understanding the effects of anesthetic agents on cardiac function and perioperative cardiovascular management.

Dr. Housmans earned his Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, graduating with highest distinction. He completed residency training in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the University of Antwerp and later pursued advanced training in cardiac anesthesia at Mayo Clinic. As a Fogarty International Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health, he conducted pioneering research in cardiovascular pharmacology and physiology, laying the foundation for a highly productive academic career.

A board-certified anesthesiologist in both Belgium and the United States, Dr. Housmans has focused his clinical and research efforts on cardiac anesthesia, myocardial physiology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and the mechanisms by which anesthetic agents affect heart function. His scientific work has advanced understanding of myocardial contractility and anesthetic-induced cardiovascular effects, influencing both clinical practice and translational research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Housmans has served in numerous leadership and advisory roles within Mayo Clinic, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the National Institutes of Health, and other national and international organizations. He has also served on editorial boards for leading scientific journals and has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Parker B. Francis Investigatorship in Anesthesiology, the B.B. Sankey Anesthesia Advancement Award, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Antwerp.
