Philip Hill is the McAuley Professor of International Health and Co-Director of the Centre for International Health at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Professor Hill holds separate qualifications as a medical practitioner (MB ChB), specialist public health physician (FAFPHM), specialist infectious diseases physician (FRACP), as well as a doctorate in the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) in The Gambia, West Africa (MD). After completing specialty training in Auckland, New Zealand, he spent six years working as a clinical epidemiologist for the MRC Laboratories in The Gambia. In The Gambia he led the TB research group and was the epidemiologist in charge of the field aspects of the pneumococcal projects. He returned to New Zealand in 2008 to set up the Centre for International Health, which now has two professorial research groups and hosts the Otago International Health Research Network that links researchers across a broad array of disciplines in New Zealand and beyond. In addition to ongoing collaborations in Africa and elsewhere, in 2008 Professor Hill's team joined the TB collaborative research group led by the University of Padjadjaran in Bandung, West Java. This research group now conducts a broad range of TB research from public health through to clinical trials and basic science, and is involved with several large multi-country/multi-institution research projects. Professor Hill has co-authored over 120 peer reviewed research articles and is a world authority on TB case contact studies. In addition to clinical trial and public health research, he specialises in field-lab link studies that aim to solve fundamental questions in TB. Professor Hill supervises postgraduate students on projects in many countries around the world and has a passion for post-graduate research capacity development in low and middle-income countries. He has been a lead or co-investigator on multi-million dollar projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MRC(UK), European Commission/Union, DFID (UK), NIH (USA), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the NHMRC (Australia), HRC (NZ) and Global Fund.
