Philip Clapson’s working life was spent in the computer industry as a technical professional, and then in management both operational and strategic. He published in mathematics and computer science and obtained a patent disclosure for a randomizer technique.

He then turned to a lifetime concern, a scientific account of human beings. He obtained an MA in the Philosophy of Psychology at King’s College London in 1998. However, convinced there could be no transcendent mind or mental life in the physical universe, the first draft of a new theory, subsequently termed Brain-Sign, was written by 2000. It was published in the journal Neuro-Psychoanalysis. It outlines a biophysical account of brain operation enabling inter-neural communication for joint action by organisms.

In 2007 he was accepted for a Ph.D. at Durham University Philosophy Department where the theory, as then developed, was written out at length. Graduating in 2012, he joined Birkbeck’s Department of Psychological Sciences. He lectures on consciousness, both its history and controversial status. Development of the brain-sign model continues and is outlined in various publications. The most recent article (2020) is: 'From Consciousness to Brain-Sign: A Neurobiological Reconstruction'.
