Peter Lloyd-Sherlock is a Professor of Social Policy and International Development in the School of International Development at UEA. His research explores the lives of older people in developing countries – especially with regard to health, well-being and social protection. He has recently led the creation of a website to share knowledge, ideas and opportunities for all those addressing the needs of the elderly during the COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown. This is called the Global Platform for the Rapid Generation and Transfer of Knowledge on COVID-19 and older adults in low and middle-income countries or GP-Older-COVID.

Peter is also interested in the economic and social effects of non-communicable diseases, such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease – and works with the global Non-communicable Disease Alliance (NCD).

Peter has studied older people’s well-being and vulnerability in a range of countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa and Thailand. He works closely with a wide range of international development agencies.

Peter has been a Senior Research Fellow at the UK Government's Department for International Development, providing advice on social development and social protection. He has been seconded to the World Health Organisation's Ageing and Lifecourse Programme, as lead planner for a new WHO Programme on Primary Healthcare for Older People. He has also worked with the UN Secretary General’s Office to promote the national capacity for mainstreaming age into development policy.
