Dr. Peter Kalbe was born in 1955 in Klettwitz/Niederlausitz into a family of surgeons. He studied medicine in Berlin and Hanover, including an internship in Stony Brook/New York. He received his license to practice medicine in 1980 and received his doctorate in 1981 on the subject of bone transplantation. Dr. Kalbe completed his clinical training at the Surgical Center of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and in the Hand Surgery Department of the Friederikenstift Hannover. His work in the MHH Trauma Surgery Clinic under Professor Harald Tscherne had a particularly significant impact on his future career. He qualified as a specialist in surgery in 1986. This was followed by a focus on trauma surgery in 1987 and a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery in 2008.

In 1989, Dr. Kalbe took over a practice as a surgeon and general practitioner in Rinteln/Weser. The practice was continually expanded and since 2012 has been run as a cross-sector facility “Praxis am Wall – Gelenkzentrum Schaumburg” with five other specialist colleagues. Dr. Kalbe began his committee work in 1996 by moderating medical quality circles. In 1998, he was elected regional chairman of the BDC|Lower Saxony. He held this position until 2010. He then took over the management of the department for practicing surgeons in the BDC, a position he still holds today. In 2019, he was also elected vice president of the BDC. Furthermore, Dr. Kalbe has been regionally involved in the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Lower Saxony (KVN) since 2004 and has also been a delegate in the KBV Representative Assembly since 2017. In both areas, he is active in several committees, sometimes as chairman.

From 2005 to 2014 he was a member of the executive committee of the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) and in 2015 he was awarded the Carl Thiem commemorative coin of the DGU for his professional commitment. From 2017 to 2019 he was also a member of the executive committee of the German Society for Surgery (DGCH) as a representative of practicing surgeons. Dr. Kalbe is married and has three adult children. When time permits, he enjoys playing tennis and traveling with his family.
