Professor Wormald was appointed to the Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1998, a joint appointment between the Adelaide and Flinders Universities. He was previously an Associate Professor at the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Hong Kong. He spent two years working with Professor Andrew van Hasselt and developing his interest in endoscopic sinus surgery and rhinology. Prior to that, he worked as a senior consultant at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He was born and educated in South Africa before moving to Australia where he and his family have now proudly taken up Australian citizenship.

Professor Wormald has super specialised in rhinology, sinus surgery and skull base surgery and now practices almost solely as a rhinologist (nose and sinus specialist) and skull base surgeon. He has developed an extensive research program into the causes and development patterns associated with these diseases and has a special interest in innovative and new treatments of nose and sinus diseases. He has been a leader in Australia and the world in new techniques and procedures for the endoscopic management of skull base tumours and has in collaboration with instrument manufacturing companies developed an extensive range of both sinus surgical and skull base instruments.
