Dr. Bennett, is Scientist Emeritus, and former Chief of the Phoenix Epidemiology and Clinical Research Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a part of the US National Institutes of Health. He has conducted research on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and its complications among the Pima Indian population of Arizona for more than 40 years. These investigations led to major advances in understanding the causes, pathogenesis and prevention of type 2 diabetes and its complications. His interests and concern about the impact of diabetes in other populations led to investigations related to diabetes and its prevention in other countries, most recently in China and Mexico. He has been an investigator and a member of the data safety and monitoring committees for clinical trials related to diabetes prevention and treatment and has been a member of many WHO and IDF advisory groups on classification, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes.
