Peta Alexander, MBBS, BSc (Hons), FCICM (Paediatrics), FRACP (Paediatric Cardiology) is a Staff Physician at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Harvard Medical School. She trained in Cardiology, Intensive Care and Heart Failure, Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne and BCH, Boston. Her clinical and research interests involve the most critically ill patients in the CICU – she shares care of many patients with advanced heart failure, ventricular assist device (VAD) and is the CICU representative on the institutional VAD Operations Committee moving towards offering destination VAD therapy to children.

Dr. Alexander is the Medical Director of Cardiac ECMO at BCH, a busy clinical program with 40 – 50 patients supported each year. Together with the Medical-Surgical ICU at BCH, she is establishing a multi-dimensional ECMO training and physician credentialing program including an online OPENPediatrics resource, a one-day simulation program with SIMPeds and local net learning. She is active in trainee education and ongoing professional development of the multi-disciplinary CICU team through clinical teaching and the use of simulation for clinical skills, critical event and crisis resource management. In addition to her clinical and management roles, Dr. Alexander is Chair of the ELSO Registry Scientific Committee, a member of the PCICS Scientific Committee and serves on the BCH Ethics Advisory Board. She appreciates Boston and living in the busy New England region of the USA, but can’t forget Australian beaches, national parks and the wide-open spaces of the home.
