Per Ljungman MD, PhD

Per Ljungman, MD, Ph.D. is specialized in internal medicine and hematology and is currently a professor of Hematology, Karolinska Institutet and research coordinator for the Regional Cancer Center, Stockholm and has just stepped down from the position as director of the Department of Hematology, Karolinska University Hospital after serving for several years. His clinical duties are focused on the follow up of patients after allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Per Ljungman’s main research interests are viral infections in patients having undergone allogeneic stem cell transplantation especially CMV and respiratory viruses. He has also studied vaccinations in patients with hematological diseases an in stem cell transplant recipients. He is the author of >300 peer reviewed papers mostly regarding outcome and complications of allogeneic stem cell transplantation. He has the author of several reviews and book chapters and is the co-editor of 4 editions of the book Transplant Infections and associate editor for the journal Bone Marrow Transplantion.

Per Ljungman served as a council member of the ICHS from 2000-2004, was vice president 2004-2006, president elect 2006-2008, president 2008-2010, and past president 2010-2012. He was the first chairman of the Infectious Diseases Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT). He has in different positions served this society including as secretary 2004-2010 and as chair of the registry committee. He was also a founding member of the European Leukemia Net and chair of the supportive care section. Per Ljungman has also been president of the Swedish Society for Hematology.
