Paulo Borem MD, IA, PSO

Paulo Borem, MD, is a Senior Project Director for the Latin America region at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), an Improvement Advisor and Patient Safety Officer, a vascular surgeon by background, and a health management specialist trained at the Osvaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). He is currently the Director of three IHI Collaboratives in Brazil and Portugal, and leads IHI’s work in the Portuguese-speaking world.
Prior to his engagements with IHI, Dr. Borem was the Director of Unimed Belo Horizonte (UBH), a health plan with more than one million clients and five thousand physicians, and his work with Unimed continues today, leading initiatives within the Unimed system related to care delivery reform, implementation of primary care transformations, and improvement of maternal and perinatal care. Dr. Borem also worked for some time as a health care and quality consultant for the World Bank and USAID in projects in India, Argentina, Mexico, and Mozambique.
