Dr. Paul Swanson is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he has practiced in general academic surgical pathology since 2001 (not counting a two-year experience at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary) with a subspecialty focus in both bone and soft tissue pathology and gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatic pathology.
He began his medical training at what is now the Oregon Health and Sciences University, completing his MD, including a post-sophomore pathology fellowship experience, in 1984. Anatomic and Clinical Pathology training at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic included a fellowship year in Surgical Pathology. After a brief stint as an Instructor at Minnesota, he was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology (now Pathology and Immunology) at Washington University in St. Louis in 1990, where he served as the primary liaison between Pathology and Gastroenterology clinical services.
He is currently Lead Pathologist in gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic pathology for UW Medicine Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and also serves as Program Director for fellowship training in this subspecialty area. He is at that point in his career when the allure of interactive teaching seems to be eclipsing the appeal of daily case management and looks forward to meaningful conversations about the process and pathology of gastrointestinal epithelial and mesenchymal disease.
