Paul Stewart joined the University of Leeds in August 2013 as Dean of Medicine and Health having previously been Dean of Medicine at University of Birmingham. Paul is currently a primary investigator within the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit in Leeds, an NIHR Senior Clinical Investigator and holds a prestigious European Research Grant which overseas research underpinning the role of cortisol and its metabolism in human ageing, obesity and hypertension.

Profess Stewart’s clinical expertise includes the management of pituitary and adrenal disorders, endocrine hypertension and reproductive medicine. He supervises an active endocrinology research group which focuses on corticosteroids, specifically the metabolism of cortisol metabolism by 11? –hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases and its role in human disease.

Professor Stewart has served as General Secretary to the Society for Endocrinology and is Secretary-Treasurer to the International Society of Endocrinology. He chairs the Chairs and Programme Grants Committee of the British Heart Foundation, is a Member of the MRC Strategy Board and is Chair of the MRC Careers and Training Committee. He has authored over 300 original peer-reviewed publications and has delivered numerous prize lectures to specialist societies.
