Paul is Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Dean of the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield. He is a diagnostic histopathologist with special expertise in oral cancer and salivary gland tumours. He is a Past-President of the International Association of Oral Pathologists, the British Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research.

He has published over 200 research papers as well as multiple books and book chapters. He has supervised 17 PhD students to completion including 4 MRC Clinical Training Fellows, 1 MRC (Canada) fellow and 2 MRC students. In the field of oral cancer research, Paul has focused on regulation of epithelial cell behaviour including the role of integrins in tumour invasion and progression. Recent work has been on biomarkers, including DNA ploidy status, and studies to evaluate oral cancer screening in primary care. Since 2009, Paul’s work has been funded by YCR, NIHR and the NIH (USA).
