Paul Holvoet is an Emeritus Professor in Biomedicine at KU Leuven, Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, group of Expêrimental Cardiology. His research focuses on the interaction between oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. He is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He is the first inventor of international patents on the association of oxidized LDL with cardiovascular diseases and on gene signatures in monocytes and derived exosomes linking oxidative stress and inflammation. He showed adipose tissue and liver protection by non-caloric sweeteners derived from Stevia in animal models.
