Paul’s lab studies how forces applied to the cell or the stiffness of the extracellular matrix affects cell structure and function. He an his group produce soft biocompatible materials to study how matrix stiffness alters cell structure, differentiation, and growth. In related work, Paul’s lab measures the structure and mechanics of cytoskeletal and extracellular matrix polymers using imaging, scattering, and rheologic methods, and examines how changes in cell membrane structure mediated by inositol phospholipids lead to production of signals that remodel the cytoskeleton.
