Patrick J. Bednarski studied biochemistry at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo before coming to Seattle in 1981 to do his doctorate in medicinal chemistry under Prof. Sidney D. Nelson at the Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Washington. The topic of his dissertation was the development of novel suicide inhibitors of the estrogen biosynthesis enzyme aromatase for the treatment of breast cancer. After receiving his doctorate in 1986, he accepted an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship to work as a postdoc under Prof. Helmut Schönenberger at the Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Regensburg. In 1989 he began his habilitation project in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Regensburg, which he completed in 1997; the topic of his habilitation was the development of novel antitumor platinum complexes. The main focus of his habilitation work and current research is on investigations into activation processes and biotransformation reactions of new Pt(II) and Pt(IV) diamine complexes. Since 1998 he has been a member of the faculty at the Institute of Pharmacy at the University of Greifswald.
