Dr. Shamlou received his PhD in chemical engineering in 1980 and was a postdoctoral fellow in polymer processing (1980-81) at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. Following a two-year experience as a process engineer in industry, Dr. Shamlou received his first academic appointment in 1983 in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at University College London (UCL). As a co-founder of the new Department of Biochemical Engineering, Dr. Shamlou served as Deputy Head of Department and Co- Director for Research in the Advance Center for Biochemical Engineering at UCL and in 2001 was awarded full professorship in biochemical engineering. At UCL, Dr. Shamlou pioneered new areas of bioprocessing research at the interface with life science discoveries, with an emphasis on the creation of new scale-down methods and miniaturization to speed up the translation of discovery to outcome, and to allow prediction of full-scale bioprocessing of advanced biologics, including therapeutic genes, antibodies and cellular systems. This work included biophysical characterization of non-viral drug delivery systems, the design of miniaturized techniques for fermentation and cell-culturing operations and the bioprocess engineering issues related to manufacturing of advanced vaccines and tissue-engineered products. His research at UCL was supported by 20 different industry and government grants and 35 PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
