Paolo Veronesi

Paolo Veronesi was born in Milan and in this city has always lived and worked as a surgeon and researcher. He is the Director of the Division of Breast Surgery at the European Institute of Oncology and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Milan. After graduation in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan in 1986, he dedicated his professional work to the study and treatment of cancer, getting the specialization in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1991 and in General Surgery in 1996.

He collaborated in the refinement of conservative surgery techniques for breast cancer and the development of the sentinel lymph node technique as well as intraoperative radiotherapy. Other important fields of research were experimentation of preoperative drug therapies for breast cancer as well as the development of the so-called “conservative” mastectomy which preserves the appearance of the breast whilst providing the complete removal of the glandular tissue.
