Panayiotis J. Papagelopoulos, MD, DSc, FACS, was born in Athens and received his Medical Degree with honors from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in Athens and received his Ph.D. at Athens University Medical School in 1990. Following fellowships in orthopedic oncology, adult reconstruction, and spine surgery at the Mayo Graduate School, in Rochester Minnesota, the USA from 1991 to 1994 he was appointed as an Associate Consultant and Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic Department of Orthopedics Mayo Medical School. In 2003, he joined the faculty of the First Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the Athens University Medical School. Since 2011, he is Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Athens University Medical School and Director of the Orthopedic Research & Education Center Panayotis N. Soucacos at the ATTIKON University General Hospital in Greece. He is the founder and Director of the Athens University Musculoskeletal Tumor Center; he is also the Director of three postgraduate MSc programs at Athens University.

Professor Papagelopoulos is currently the President-Elect of the International Society for Limb Salvage (ISOLS) and he is also the President of the Hellenic Association Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology (HAOST). Professor Papagelopoulos serves as an Editorial Board member for more than 10 journals and he is an active member of many national and international medical societies including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), the European Musculoskeletal Oncology Society (EMSOS), and the World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery (WSRM).
