Dr. Palas Chanda obtained MS and M.Tech degrees in Biochemistry and Biotechnology respectively. His research career started as a doctoral candidate at Bose Institute, Kolkata, India. He got trained as a molecular biologist in the field of transcriptional regulation of gene expression. He worked on molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance of human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and developed a fluorescence-based biological assay system to screen antistaphylococcal as well as hazardous compounds in a high throughput manner. Next, he joined the University of Calcutta as a Research Associate, a position equivalent to a postdoctoral fellow, as a molecular biologist to work on sheath blight disease of the rice plant, the idea was to utilize transcriptional regulation of pathogenesis-related proteins of the rice plant and develop sheath blight resistant transgenic rice.
