Ottmar Herchenroeder is interested in combating communicable diseases as well as cancer and heart failure. Early on he focused on the pathogenesis after infection with HIV or other retroviruses. In order to understand the development of these diseases, it is important to uncover the interaction between physiologically relevant organs, tissues, and cells with pathogenic factors. Be it an invading pathogen such as a virus, or an abnormal mutation in a cell that causes malfunction or eventually leads to cancer, uncovering the relevant molecular mechanisms underlying subsequent diseases is the first step to healing. Therefore Ottmar Herchenroeder develops experimental procedures, such as virus-based vectors, as tools for basic research and possibly for future application for the benefit of patients. In his lectures and courses on virology, molecular medicine, and didactics as professional preparation, the focus is on the in-depth imparting of knowledge and skills in order to prepare students for a career in biology, biotechnology, or medicine. For me, the IEGT, with its interdisciplinary and multilingual staff, is the right place to successfully achieve my research and training goals. to prepare students for a career in biology, biotechnology, or medicine.
