Dr. Al-Mefty feels a sense of fulfillment each time a patient inflicted with skull base disorder has a positive outcome. He has contributed to the development of widely practiced innovative surgical approaches that enable the treatment of many skull base lesions. He has documented these techniques in the literature. Dr. Al-Mefty has had the privilege to mentor many outstanding neurosurgeons from around the world who have gone on to become leaders and major contributors to the skull base field.

Focusing on chordomas and meningiomas, Dr. Al-Mefty has utilized his wealth of clinical experience to study and define the biological behavior of these tumors. Collaborative studies with cytogeneticists and pathologists exemplify the transitional research that led to clinical prognostic and management indicators. His early interest in spondylotic myelopathy led to the recognition of intramedullary lesion that can be demonstrated by imaging. His animal research model establishes the pathophysiology of this baffling disease.
