Dr. Oscar F. Gonçalves holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Psychology from the University of Porto in Portugal (1981), a Doctorate from the Counseling, School and Consulting Psychology Program of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1986), a PhD equivalence degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy from the University of Lisbon, Portugal (1987) and a DeA from the Doctoral program in Neurosciences at the University of Vigo, Spain (2003). He has published several books, book chapters and more than 150 papers. His current research focus is on the interaction between neurocognitive markers and brain structure and functioning in developmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and psychopathological processes. He is the founder of the Neuropsychophysiology Lab where he is systematically investigating several clinical conditions (Williams Syndrome; Schizophrenia; Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders; Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer Dementia) in order to unravel the neural correlates of a diversity of cognitive-emotional processes (sensory processing; processing speed; set shifting; language; memory; social cognition – including emotional processing; theory of mind; and empathy) using a variety of laboratory techniques ( psychophysiological registering; Electroencephalography/Event Related Potential methods; Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Neuromodulation).
