Onisillos Sekkides acquired a BSc in biology in 1997 at what is now Queen Mary, University of London (UK). He then went on to study for an MSc in biochemical engineering at University College London (UK) in 1998 and subsequently an MSc in medical microbiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK) in 1999. He joined The Lancet Group as an Assistant Editor in 2009 and after several roles across the journals, he became Deputy Editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases from 2014 to 2019. In 2020, He became the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Microbe.
