Omar Mahroo MA, MB, BChir, PhD, FRCOphth, FHEA

Dr. Omar Mahroo is a professor of retinal neuroscience at University College London and a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He completed his medical degree and Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge and postdoctoral work at the Australian National University. He completed his ophthalmology training in London, including an academic clinical lectureship at King's College London, and a retinal fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He has received numerous research grants, including a £1.1 million Wellcome Trust award in 2017. In 2019, he was awarded 'Rising Star of the Year' by the Macular Society. In 2020, he received an award for excellence in teaching from the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and an award for public and patient engagement from the Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre. Clinically, he cares for patients with the retinal disease (specializing in genetic retinal disease), and academically, he leads a research group investigating human retinal responses in health and disease.
