Prof. Dr. Oliver Muensterer is the new head of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Pediatric Surgery at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). The expert in the field of minimally invasive surgery, also known as "keyhole surgery", intends to continue the clinic's endosurgical focus and further expand the possibilities of the minimally invasive approach to patient care. In research, his focus is on the development of innovative endosurgical methods, the use of multiphoton microscopy in the congenital intestinal disease Hirschsprung disease, and in the area of prenatal therapies, for example in the congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Born in Canada, he studied human medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, earning his doctorate and habilitation.

He will strengthen and further develop pediatric surgery," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Babette Simon, Chair of the Board and Medical Director of the University Medical Center Mainz. “This successful appointment is also of particular importance with regard to the Research Center for Translational Medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz because Muensterer also stands for translational research in the field of pediatric surgery.”
