Ofelia Bercaru PhD

Ofelia Bercaru is leading one of the units in the Hazard Assessment Directorate in ECHA. She has long-term experience in the regulatory field of chemicals, hazard assessment, and environmental monitoring. Ofelia joined ECHA in 2009, being involved from the early days in developing the Evaluation processes under REACH. She has been in charge for many years of managing the dossier evaluation process.

More recently, she took over the leading role for substance evaluation and identification of substances of very high concern. Before joining ECHA she has been working in the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre on projects for implementation of the Water Framework Directive and development of reference materials for environmental monitoring. Prior to that, she worked in the field of environmental monitoring and risk assessment at The National Institute of Ecology in Romania. Ofelia graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1995 and holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
