Odd Helge Gilja MD, PhD

Odd Helge Gilja is currently Director and Senior Consultant at National Centre for Ultrasound in Gastroenterology at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen. He is also a Professor at the University of Bergen and Scientific Director of MedViz, a research consortium in medical imaging and visualization established by Haukeland University Hospital, University of Bergen, and Christian Michelsen Research AS, Norway.

Odd Helge Gilja received his medical degree from the University of Bergen in 1988 and did his Ph.D. in 1997 in Bergen. He specialized in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen. He was appointed Professor in Medicine in 2002. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. candidates. He serves on the Editorial Board of 6 journals. He has received 6 international prizes and obtained The George Badea Medal for outstanding achievements in the development and promotion of ultrasonography in Romania.

He was president of the Norwegian Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound in Medicine from 2001 to 2007. He has been chairman of EFSUMB’s Education and Professional Standards The committee, Honorary Secretary, and is now President of EFSUMB. He is a member of WFUMB’s Sponsorship committee since 2013. He is the Editor of 7 books and is an author of over 230 scientific papers, as well as 50 popular science publications.
