Nutan Sharma, MD, PhD is the director of the Collaborative Center for X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP) and is responsible for overseeing all basic and clinical research activities supported by the center.

Dr. Sharma is an expert in dystonia, and serves as the director of the Partners Neurology Dystonia Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Sharma evaluates and cares for patients with dystonia while also training movement disorder fellows, neurology residents and Harvard Medical School (HMS) students.She also serves as an individual career mentor for the Partners Neurology Residency Program serving Mass General, Brigham and Women's Hospital and HMS.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Sharma is an Associate Professor of Neurology at Mass General and HMS, studying both dystonia and Parkinson's disease. Her current efforts include studying the way in which genetic forms of dystonia affect the dopamine neurotransmission, and working closely with geneticists to identify the role of genetics in the development of dystonia. She is widely published and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, Neurology, Movement Disorders, American Journal of Pathology and Acta Neuropathologica.

After graduating from the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a doctorate of medicine and a doctorate of philosophy in neuroscience, Dr. Sharma trained at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, IL, in internal medicine and at Yale University in neurology. She completed a fellowship in movement disorders at Mass General. Dr. Sharma is board-certified in neurology.She consults for pediatric movement disorders at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, both in Boston.
