Dr Gene-Cos completed her Doctor of medicine and surgery, LMC (MD) degree in 1981 at Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. Moving to London, she trained in adult psychiatry and neuropsychiatry at Charing Cross Hospital.
She became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in 1999, and received her certificate of completion of training in general adults, with an endorsement in liaison psychiatry, neuropsychiatry.
She became interested in the area of post-traumatic stress disorder while doing her doctorate as a lecturer at the Royal London Hospital. She was appointed as a consultant psychiatrist at the Traumatic Stress Service in 2002.
