Dr. Berka is a Clinical Full Professor at the University of Calgary where he serves as the Clinical Director/Transplant Laboratory Consultant of Calgary Laboratory Services. He also serves as the Head of the Histocompatibility Lab Director training program. He completed a Doctoral degree in Human Genetics at Howard University, Washington DC and then trained in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics at University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has several years of experience in the field of HLA and transplantation and have published extensively in this area. He is particularly interested in immunology of solid organ and stem cell transplantation; the role of host Immunogenetics in diseases; and the characterization of HLA polymorphism and population genetic studies. Dr. Berka is a board member of the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). He has held several leadership positions at ASHI and currently serve as the past chair of the ASHI Director’s Training Review and Credentialing committee (DTRC). The DTRC is responsible for reviewing and evaluating all candidates that seek approval for becoming ASHI certified laboratory directors.
