Norbert Klein received his Diploma and PhD in Physics from University of Wuppertal in Germany. In 1990, he joined Juelich Research Center in Germany and worked there as division leader for electromagnetic sensors till September 2009. From 1998 till 2009, Norbert was lecturer for Physics at the Technical University of Aachen (Habilitation) and Technical University of Dortmund in Germany.

In October 2009, Norbert joined the Department of Materials as full professor and Chair in Electromagnetic Materials. His work is linked with different teams at the National Physical Laboratory, where he holds a part time distinguished research fellow position.

At Imperial, he launched the Centre of Terahertz Science and Engineering (CTSE), and he holds the position of the director of the CTSE. The CTSE, which is jointly operated with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is one of the top UK facilities for THz research, the equipment include top benchmark vector network analyzers for frequencies up to 500 GHz and a picosecond time domain spectrometer for 0.1 - 3 THz.

Norbert's main scientific activities are in the area of electromagnetic material characterization and sensor applications, but also on microwave and terahertz devices for communciation and sensing. One current focus is on graphene and related 2D materials, where Norbert is currently establishing a cluster system for 4" graphene growth by chemical vapour deposition. The other focus is on microwave-to-terahertz biosensing, in particular blood analysis by microfluidic-resonator assemblies and single cell detecion in biological liquids.
