Dr. med. Norbert Gattermann studied medicine in Dusseldorf, London and Boston and received his doctorate and habilitation in Dusseldorf. He is a medical doctor specializing in hematology and internal oncology. After completing his habilitation, he continued his work at the Department of Hematology, Oncology and Clinical Immunology (Director: Prof. Dr. R. Haas) as Senior Physician and was Deputy Clinic Director there from 2000-2008. Prof. Gattermann was appointed Managing Director of the University Heart Center of Heinrich Heine University (HHU) in Düsseldorf in 2007. His research focuses on myeloid neoplasms, in particular epidemiology, pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes. He has initiated in-house clinical trials with MDS patients and is head of clinical trials in several multicentre trials. In addition, he deals with the topic of iron overload, on the one hand from the aspect of transfusion-related iron overload and their treatment and on the other hand in connection with the molecular pathomechanism of sideroblastic anemia. Other clinical focus areas include CML treatment and epigenetic treatment of myeloid neoplasms with demethylating agents and histone deacetylase inhibitors.
