Norah van Mello combined her residency as a gynecologist with her Ph.D. research project (2007-2015). Her research included systematic meta-analysis papers, RCTs, and an international consensus statement. During her Ph.D., she was especially skilled in patient preference studies in fertility research.
From 2016 onward Van Mello has embedded a staff gynecologist in the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria, Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, as a surgeon, endocrinologist, and fertility consultant. She initiated dedicated fertility counseling for transgender people. She was in the lead in the development of an online Decision Aid for fertility preservation with a team of medical specialists, psychologists, and patients (transmen, oncology, and endometriosis).
Van Mello is co-promotor of four Ph.D. students all within the field of transgender care, fertility, and gynecology. She established international collaborations, was co-authoring the Fertility & Reproduction chapter for the Standards of Care of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), and was invited speaker for the Year in Review on Reproductive Health at European Professional Association for Transgender Health (EPATH) 2021.
