Nivaldo Alonso MD, PhD

Nivaldo Alonso, MD, PhD, is associate professor of plastic surgery at the Department of Surgery and director of the Service of Craniofacial Surgery at the Hospital das Clinicas at the University of São Paulo (USP). Professor Alonso is also Clinical Director of the Craniofacial Unit of the Hospital for Craniofacial Anomalies at the USP and past president of the Brazilian Association of Craniofacial Surgery 2000-2002. Since 1998 professor Alonso is working with Operation Smile International taking care of children with craniofacial deformities all around the world. He served as Medical Director for Operation Smile Brazil from 2004 to 2011 and since 2008, he runs a comprehensive cleft care clinic in São Paulo, taking care of patients as well as providing education for surgeons and speech therapists from other parts of Brazil funded by Smile Train. Professor Alonso is deeply engaged to improve surgical care in low- and middle-income countries countries.
