Dr. Karakala is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine. He received his medical degree from the Deccan College of Medical Sciences in India. He completed his internal medicine residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Maryland and his nephrology fellowship training at the Medical University of South Carolina. He served as the Chief Nephrology Fellow at MUSC as well. Dr. Karakala was on the faculty at MUSC for two years before coming to UAMS.
Dr. Karakala is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. His clinical interests are continuous renal replacement therapy, early prognostic markers of acute kidney injury, and volume management in acute kidney injury. His research interests include biomarkers in renal disease.
